The ancient practice of acupuncture started in China approximately 3000 years ago. The first documentation of acupuncture that described it as an organized system of diagnosis and treatment is in The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine which dates back to 100 years BC.
Otzi the Iceman mummy was discovered in the Italian Alps in 1991 Otzi, a spectacularly preserved body of a man from about 5300 years ago. He May have consumed herbal medicine and had acupuncture treatment, since tattoos skin to the location of significant acupuncture points and prescriptions were preserved on his body. This raises questions ; Is acupuncture even older than we believe and was it known about more widely than in China ?
